Medicare Supplement Plan G is definitely the most popular Medigap plan for people who are new to Medicare, and its benefits are very easy to understand.

With just one small deductible to pay and relatively low premiums, it’s no surprise that more people enroll in Medicare Supplement Plan G than any other plan.

With Medicare Supplement Plan G there is no network. You may visit any doctor, specialist, or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare and they will also accept your Plan G policy.

And just as it was in 2023, Medicare Supplement Plan G will be the most popular Medicare Supplement plan for 2024.

What is Medicare Supplement Plan G?

Of all the Medigap plans available, Medigap Plan G (sometimes called Medicare Part G) offers the 2nd highest coverage right behind Medicare Plan F. While Plan F covers 100% of the coverage gaps of Original Medicare, it’s not available to everyone.

And even many people who do qualify to enroll in a Plan F supplement opt for Medigap Plan G due to it having lower premiums and almost the same coverage as Plan F.

Specifically, here is a comprehensive list of items that are covered by Medigap Plan G:

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital coverage) Coinsurance and Costs
  • Medicare Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A Deductible
  • Medicare Part B Coinsurance and Copays
  • Medicare Part B Excess charges
  • Blood (The First 3 Pints)
  • Foreign Travel Emergency Coverage

What does Medigap Plan G Not Cover?

As you can see, Medigap Plan G covers almost everything not covered by Medicare Part A and B when it comes to Medical expenses.

The main gap not covered by Medigap Plan G is the Medicare Part B Annual deductible. In fact, that is the only difference between Medicare Plan F and Medicare Supplement Plan G, other than Plan G being substantially lower in cost in most cases.

Consumer reviews of Plan G rate very high because of how comprehensive this coverage is.

Medigap Plan G: Annual Part B Deductible

By paying this Medicare Part B deductible yourself each year with a Medicare Supplement Plan G, you end up saving a considerable amount of money over enrolling in a Medicare Plan F supplement.

Medicare Part B Deductible 2024

Prior to Medicare Part B paying any medical bills, you must pay the annual Medicare Part B deductible. This is a once-per-year deductible you must meet, not per occurrence. In January of the following year, the deductible resets.

In 2024 this deductible amount is $240, and it’s paid only once per year. The high deductible Medicare Plan G deductible amount for 2024 is $2,800.

So, starting each January, you will be billed the first $240 of any medical bills. Once you meet the $240 amount, Medicare Part B will begin paying 80% of all Medicare-approved expenses for doctor’s (outpatient) services.

Medigap Plan G will then begin paying the remaining 20% of those bills, up to no limit. There are no more deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance for you to pay with Plan G. You simply pay the Medicare Supplement Insurance company a monthly premium, and they take care of the rest when it comes to the claims being paid.

Furthermore, Medigap Plan G also provides additional coverage for preventative services such as yearly checkups and routine vaccinations at no additional cost. This means that you don’t have to pay anything out of pocket for routine preventative care when using your plan in conjunction with Original Medicare.

Medicare Part B Deductible 2024

The Medicare Part B deductible amount changes each year, based on a variety of factors.

For example, inflation can cause a change, typically a raise, in the deductible. Some factors such as Medicare cost-sharing of a new and expensive medication can play a part just as it did in 2022.

The Medicare Part B deductible for 2024 will be released later this year, so keep checking back to this page as we will post it once it becomes available.

How Medicare Plan G Works

Unlike some other Medicare plans, Medicare Supplement Plan G has the highest level of coverage with just one small deductible to pay. As mentioned, Plan G is now the most popular Medigap plan for people new to Medicare and it will likely remain that for several years.

Additionally, once an individual is enrolled in a plan, they are eligible to receive emergency care anywhere in the United States regardless of their home state’s laws.

Plan G does require that participants meet certain criteria before enrolling. In order to be eligible for Medicare Plan G, one must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and B. If you are within 6 months of enrolling in Part B, you may enroll in Medicare Plan G with no medical questions asked.

6-Month Medigap Open Enrollment Period

If you are within 6 months of enrolling in Part B, you may enroll in Medicare Plan G with no medical questions asked. You are guaranteed to be accepted into the plan.

If you are outside of this period, then it’s likely you will have to go through medical underwriting when you apply. Once approved for a Medicare Plan G plan, beneficiaries can choose from a variety of different options depending on their needs and budget requirements.

These plans may provide different levels of coverage including hospitalization, outpatient visits, doctor visits, preventive care services such as screenings and vaccinations, mental health services like counseling and therapy sessions, prescription drugs coverage through generic drug lists, or discounted prices up to 90%.

When it comes to finding the best Medicare Supplement Plan G, that depends on which companies offer the lowest premiums in your area. You can check these now by entering your zip code above.

Each Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan is Standardized

Several private insurance companies offer Medicare Supplement Plan G, but they all have the same exact Plan G with the same benefits.

This is because Medicare Supplement Plans are standardized by the federal government. This means every company that offers this insurance must offer identical plans and benefits within those plans.

That being said, each company has entirely different rates for the exact same Medigap policies! This can get confusing and causes many people to overpay for their Medigap coverage.

Trying to shop for Medigap Plan G from every single insurance carrier on your own is a complete nightmare. You’d have to call every company separately and talk to a sales agent who will try to sell you their Plan G. And you’ll never know if they have the lowest premium.

In fact, the difference in cost for Plan G from one company to another can be over $100 per month. For example, a Medigap Plan G policy in Tuscon, AZ will be substantially less per month than one in NYC.
