Medicare Supplement Insurance Explained

Medicare, a health insurance program that is sponsored by the United States federal government, consists of several parts. Together, Part A and Part B make up Original Medicare.

Medicare Part A covers the expenses that are related to inpatient medical care and services, like hospital stays and hospice care, and Part B covers the costs that are associated with outpatient medical care and services, like doctor visits and durable medical equipment.

Though Original Medicare does cover a lot, it doesn’t cover everything, and beneficiaries are responsible for making up the difference.

Medicare Supplement Insurance: An Overview

For many, the out-of-pocket expenses that are associated with Original Medicare can be costly and can result in financial hardship; Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, can be a real lifesaver.

This insurance is designed to supplement Original Medicare by covering the costs that Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B don’t cover; copays, coinsurance, and deductibles, for example.

There are 10 separate Medigap plans, which are named for letters (Plans A through N), and each lettered plan covers different expenses; but, all plans that are the same letter must offer the same standard benefits.

When you receive medical care, after the costs that are covered by  Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B are deducted from your bill, Medicare Supplement Insurance will kick in and cover the expenses for the benefits it provides.

Medigap plans are sold by private insurance companies, like Continental Life.

Of the 10 policies Continental Life offers, the following plans are the most popular:

  • What Medicare Supplement Plans Does Continental Life OfferMedigap Plan F. Of all the Medicare Supplement Insurance policies, Plan F is the most popular. That’s because it offers the most complete coverage, as it covers most of the out-of-pocket expenses that Original Medicare doesn’t pay for. Benefits include:
    • Part A coinsurance and hospital expenses
    • Part B coinsurance or copayment
    • Part A deductible
    • Part B deductible
    • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
    • Part B excess charges
    • Coinsurance for skilled nursing facility care
    • First three pints of blood required for blood transfusions
    • Emergency medical care while traveling abroad

It’s important to note that as of January 1, 2020, Plan F cannot be sold to new Medicare enrollees; in other words, anyone who became eligible for Medicare after this date.

  • Medigap Plan G. Medigap Plan G is the second most popular Medicare Supplement Insurance policy. It’s considered a replacement for Plan G, as all beneficiaries can purchase this policy, including new enrollees. Additionally, Plan G offers the same benefits as Plan F, except the Part B deductible. In 2023, the cost of the Part B deductible was $226.
  • Medigap Plan N. Plan N is another very popular Medicare Supplement Insurance policy. It’s a great value, as the monthly premiums are lower; however, in exchange, for lower premiums, you’ll have to cover the copays, which can cost up to $20 per office visit and up to $50 per emergency room visit. You’ll also need to cover the Part B excess charges.

As with any Medicare Supplement Insurance plan, as long as you’re enrolled in both parts of Original Medicare, you can purchase Medigap insurance through Continental Life at any time.

The ideal time to enroll, however, is during the Medigap Open Enrollment period.
