Medicare Plan F Coverage
Supplemental insurance can be a great way to take care of that pesky medical expense that you have to pay even after basic medical provides you with some coverage. Those expenses can really add up, despite the excellent coverage that basic Medicare provides for you.
You’ll have to look at what supplemental plans can do for you to determine if one of them may be a great pick for you. In many cases, seniors benefit from supplement insurance and save money by adding that coverage onto their basic Medicare insurance.
Plan F is the one Supplement plan to offer you full coverage. It covers every single supplemental item, and there are quite a few of them. We will cover those for you now so that you can be informed about whether Plan F is right for you.
Keep in mind that other supplemental insurance plans provide coverage for some of these items. So if you don’t need all of Plan F’s coverage, but you would like some of these things covered for you, then you simply have to choose a different Supplement plans than Plan F.
There is nearly a dozen of them in all to pick from, so it should not be too hard to find one that fits you well. Only people who were enrolled in Medicare before January of 2020 may enroll in a Plan F.
Plan F takes care of up to three pints of blood each year for you. That’s three more pints than the basic Medicare covers for you. Once the basic Medicare coverage finishes, then you can simply start receiving coverage from Plan F.
Plan F will add coverage to your Part A expenses as well. That’s a part of Medicare that the basic medical plan provides some coverage for. But Medicare asks that you pay for the deductible and copayments on this part of the plan. Supplement Plan F takes care of both of those expenses for you. Those can be hefty costs, and it will definitely benefit you to have these common and costly expenses covered by your insurance plan.
You can also be covered for Part B expenses. Your deductible, copayments, and excess charges are all included in Plan F’s coverage. You won’t have to pay those expenses anymore if you have this powerful coverage plan. These are often not as expensive as Part A’s costs, but they can still be substantial.
Your hospice care coinsurance can be covered as well. This is what you pay when you go for hospice treatment, but Plan F has you covered there, up to a preset limit.
Your nursing care coinsurance can be covered too. You pay that cost each time you receive nursing care services, and you won’t have to pay that anymore with Plan F’s coverage.
The cost of being transported for emergency medical treatment outside of the US can be covered as well. This is known as foreign travel exchange, and it can be quite costly.
Plan F provides as much coverage as possible for this expense taking care of up to 80% for the cost of each instance after you have paid the deductible.
This is one item of coverage that could eventually run out on you, though, even if you stick with Plan F. You only get covered up to $50,000 for your lifetime on this expense, but that is plenty for most people.

Once you are approved, you will see your plan go into effect on any day you choose. You should have an idea of what you are going to do before the term for your current plan is up.
Plan F is not compatible with any other Supplement plans, there is a lot of overlap between them, so it would not make sense to sign up for more than one of them, and Medicare won’t allow you to. It also is not compatible with Medicare Advantage plans, but it works just fine with Medicare Part D plans.
Is Plan F a Good Choice?
You have many options for supplemental coverage, and you need to consider all of them before you go all-in on Plan F. This is a very expensive plan, so it is not something that we would recommend to everyone. It is usually something best reserved for people who have lots of medical expenses even with basic Medicare covering them.
When you look at the cost for Plan F and the cost of another similar supplemental plasm you can see that the other plans are often a better value for you. For instance, Plan G offers just about the same level of coverage, only leaving off coverage for the Medicare Part B deductible.
Plan N is similar in coverage as well. It won’t cover you for the Part D deductible either, or the Part B excess charges and some copayments, but it covers everything else.
These two plans are nearly identical to Plan F, except for some small expenses that most people can afford to pay out of their own pockets.
