Medicare Supplement Plans – What they Pay

Medicare supplement plans help pay the gaps, or expenses, in both Medicare Part A and B. These include things like deductibles, co-payments, and coinsurance that you’re required to pay.

Medicare Part A covers hospitalization, and Part B covers doctor’s services. Both of these have these gaps, and they must be paid prior to Medicare paying any portion of your bills.

Medicare Supplement Plan N

With Medicare Plan N, you’re required to pay:

  • The annual Part B deductible
  • Up to a $20 co-pay per doctor’s visit after the deductible is met
  • A $50 co-pay if you visit the emergency room and you’re not admitted
  • Any Part B excess charges (excluding states listed below)

Medicare Plan N has some of the best coverage of all the Medigap plans, right behind Medicare Plan G.

With Medicare Plan N, you must pay the annual Part B deductible prior to Medicare paying 80% of your medical bills. Once this is met, Plan N will begin paying the remaining 20% of your costs. Remember, Part B is for doctor’s services.

Low Co-pays

After you meet this annual deductible, you might have a small co-pay with Plan N for each doctor’s visit for the rest of the year. This co-pay is small, and will never be more than $20 per visit. There are no co-pays for telehealth visits which is a great feature.

Also, on Plan N if you visit the emergency room and you’re not admitted, you’ll get billed a $50 co-pay for the visit. This does not apply to urgent care visits, however.

Medicare Part B Excess Charges (Rare)

One other thing on Plan N that may come up but is quite rare, is Medicare Part B excess charges. If your doctor does not accept the assigned rates from Medicare, they’re allowed to charge up to 15% extra of what Medicare normally allows.

These excess charges are quite rare, in fact, it’s estimated that over 96% of all doctors in the U.S. accept Medicare assignments and do not charge these. Recent studies show that nearly 99% of all insurance company claims do not include any excess charges, and the average charge of the 1% that did was less than $20.

The following states are not allowed to charge Part B excess charges:

  • Connecticut
  • Minnesota
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Massachusetts
  • New York

Medicare Plan N 2022 Cost

The most important factor when it comes to Medicare supplement plans is that each insurance carrier offers the exact same coverage within each plan letter. That means a Plan N has the same exact coverage regardless of which company offers it. The rates, however, are all entirely different from each company!
