Medicare Supplement Plan G in 2024 - Changes

Are you doing due diligence on Supplemental Medigap plans? Understanding all the aspects of Medicare and Medigap can leave your head spinning.

One of the biggest things people confuse with Medicare is the coverage it provides them for their healthcare expenses.

You might assume that because you’re purchasing Original Medicare, you don’t have to worry about incurring medical expenses during the year. Unfortunately, reality comes crashing down after your first visit to the doctor’s office, and a few weeks later you get a bill.

How can this be possible? You paid your Medicare Plan G premium, and now you must pay an amount towards your first visit. The reality is Original Medicare only covers 80% of your medical bills, but you first must meet the annual Medicare Part B deductible.

Medicare Part B Deductible 2024

That’s where Medigap policies come into play. You get supplemental coverage for the rest of your medical expenses. While this theory is sound, Medigap doesn’t entirely cover everything, and this post helps you understand the deductible threshold you need to meet before your Medigap policy kicks in.

We’ll also look at what the Medicare Supplement Plan G Deductible 2024 offers versus what it costs in 2023 and what you can expect from your annual contributions to reduce your medical expenses.

What is Medicare Plan G?

Medicare Plan G is a supplemental insurance policy available to Original Medicare members enrolled in Parts A & B. You can register for Medigap Plan G for six months after your 65th birthday with no medical underwriting, or any time during the year if you are enrolled in Medicare Part A and B.

Just keep in mind if you enroll outside the six-month Medigap open enrollment period, you will likely have to go through medical underwriting to get approved.

Registering within the 6-month window guarantees your acceptance to Plan G, even if you have pre-existing health conditions.

Medigap Plan G Benefits

The Federal Government standardized the benefits offered by Original Medicare and Medigap plans. Plan G provides Medicare members the highest level of coverage for their medical expenses. This comprehensive plan covers you for the following inpatient and outpatient services.

  • The Part A deductible.
  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used up.
  • Part A hospice care copayment or coinsurance.
  • Part B excess charges.
  • Part B copayments or coinsurance.
  • The first three pints of blood in transfusions (Medicare covers the fourth pint and beyond).
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance.
  • Emergency health care for the first 60 days when traveling outside the US.

Medigap Plan G doesn’t cover the costs of preventative treatments, like acupuncture. Nor does it cover you for the cost of prescriptions (Plan D offers this coverage). However, some insurers offer additional benefits covering hearting, vision, and dental for an additional fee on top of your Plan G premium.

Medicare Plan G Cost

Medigap Plan G premiums vary from state to state and by the insurer. While Medicare benefits and costs are standardized for all members by the Federal government, it’s not the same for supplemental Medigap Plans.

Private insurers offer Medigap plans, and they can set the premium rates as they see fit. As a result, some insurers charge more for Plan G than others.

However, that’s not always the case in all states, as insurers can vary in pricing. For instance, one insurer might have the highest premium for Plan G in one state and the lowest in another.

That’s where we can help to guide you in choosing the best insurer in your state for the most affordable premium.

Medigap Plan G Deductible

The deductible is the threshold you must pay before your Medigap Plan G policy activates and pays your outstanding medical benefits not covered by Medicare Parts A & B. Plan G is available in the standard deductible version from most private insurers in states across America.

There’s a high-deductible version of Plan G available from select insurers and in some states; it’s not as readily available as the standard version.

The high-deductible Plan G increases the Part A deductible to $2,700 for 2023. However, you get a lower monthly premium.

The high-deductible Plan G is suitable for retirees and seniors who don’t incur many medical expenses during the year but want to maintain the best level of coverage in a medical emergency. The standard version of Plan G is the better choice for Medicare members with chronic health conditions who visit the doctor or hospital several times a year.

Medicare Part B Deductible

For 2023, the Medicare Part B deductible for 2023 is $226. You’ll need to pay this amount before your Plan G benefits start to kick in. However, if you have the high-deductible version of Plan G, this includes your Part A Deductible of $2,700. You must reach this threshold before accessing your benefits if you have the standard version of Plan G.

Currently, only Plan F offers coverage for this deductible amount. Still, you’ll pay more in premiums for Plan F. Plan F is also discontinued for new Medicare members eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020.

The Medicare Part B Deductible for 2024 for Plan G

Medigap deductibles change from time to time. For instance, the deductible in 2021 was $203 for Part B and $1,556 for Part A. These deductible limits change because insurers must offset rising medical costs and economic factors like inflation.

However, they don’t change every year. Your Medigap provider will notify you in advance of any increases in cost to your premium or deductible amounts.

Because inflation is a large factor, the Medicare Part B deductible for 2024 is unknown at this time but should be released in late September of this year. Keep checking back to our site as we will update this amount once it is available.

Medicare Premiums for 2024

Medicare Plan G vs Plan N

Understanding the complexities of Medicare can be a challenge, especially when trying to compare supplemental plans such as Plan G and Plan N. However, a comprehensive evaluation of their coverage, costs, and potential benefits can help you make a well-informed decision.

Medicare Plan N still requires that you pay the Medicare Part B deductible annually.

Understanding Medicare Plan G

Medicare Supplement Plan G is a robust coverage option that fills most gaps in Original Medicare. It covers copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles associated with Part A. While it does not cover the Part B deductible, it does manage the Part B coinsurance and excess charges. These are the additional costs you may face if a healthcare provider charges more than Medicare’s standard rate.

Decoding Medicare Plan N

Medigap Plan N, on the other hand, is a slightly less comprehensive plan that balances out-of-pocket costs with lower premiums. Just like Plan G, Plan N covers Part A’s copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. When it comes to Part B, Plan N covers the coinsurance but asks beneficiaries to pay a small copayment for certain office visits and emergency room trips. Unlike Plan G, Plan N does not cover Part B excess charges.

Also, on Plan N you could have a copay per doctor’s visit of up to $20, as well as a $50 copay if you visit the ER and you’re not admitted.

Comparing Medicare Plan G and Plan N

The primary differences between Plan G and Plan N revolve around Part B coverage and premiums. Plan G is known for its extensive coverage and higher premiums, providing peace of mind against unexpected medical costs. Plan N, with its slightly less coverage but lower premiums, could be a better choice for those in good health who don’t frequently visit the doctor.

Medicare Plan G could be up to $30 less per month than Plan G.

Making the Right Choice

Ultimately, choosing between Plan G and Plan N depends on your healthcare needs, budget, and tolerance for out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Plan G is typically favored by those wanting comprehensive coverage and who don’t mind paying a higher premium to avoid out-of-pocket expenses.

Conversely, Plan N can be attractive if you’re relatively healthy and looking to save on premium costs.

Remember, comparing plans from various insurance companies can also help you find the best rates and coverage. Be sure to consider all the factors before deciding which plan is right for you.
