Medicare Supplement Plans & Coverage

Medicare supplement plans, also called “Medigap”, were designed to help pay medical expenses that Medicare Part A and B do not cover.

Key parts of Medicare Supplement coverage include:

  • Medigap covers the gap costs.
  • Medicare supplement plans are available in all states.
  • There are three pricing structures.
  • Some providers provide discounts.
  • Providers cannot cause you to wait for coverage to begin.
  • The one-time enrollment period is the best time to apply, but it only lasts six months.
  • Newly eligible seniors cannot purchase Medigap plans that include Part B deductibles.

Aetna Medicare Plan G

By far the most popular Medicare supplement plan offered by Aetna is Medicare Plan G. Plan g offers incredible coverage with just one small out-of-pocket expense that you need to pay.

This expense is the Medicare Part B deductible, and it’s paid only once per year. In 2023 the Part B deductible is $226. After you meet this deductible, Medicare will pay 80% of all your medical bills, and Plan G will pick up the difference.

There are no other deductibles, co-pays, or coinsurance that you need to pay with Plan G. It’s the best coverage!

Aetna Medicare Plan N

More people will be enrolling in Aetna’s Medicare Plan N than any other company due to their fantastic rates. Aetna offers a household discount as well on many of its policies, and Plan N offers fantastic coverage.

Medicare Plan N is close to Plan G, in that you still pay the Part B deductible and then get 100% coverage from Medicare and the plan.

The difference with Plan N is that the monthly premiums are much lower than Plan G. In fact they can be up to $30 less per month!

For lower premiums, you might have some extra out-of-pocket costs on Plan N. Those costs include:

  • Up to a $20 co-pay per doctor’s visit (Telehealth not included)
  • A $50 Emergency room co-pay if not admitted
  • Does not cover Part B excess charges (rare)
