Texas Medicare Supplement Plans

Official Texas State Seal

There are several Texas Medicare Supplement Plans currently available and offered to cover the gaps in Medicare. These cover things like deductibles and coinsurance. The plans are currently lettered A - L, with Texas Medigap Plans M and N available in June of 2010.

Medigap insurance companies in Texas must sell you a Medigap policy regardless of pre-existing health claims, if you are at least 65 years old and apply within 6 months of enrolling in Medicare Part B. For instance, if you have waited to enroll in Medicare Part B due to having employer coverage, you will still have the 6 month open enrollment period from the day your Medicare Part B coverage begins.

If you are in Texas and are under the age of 65 and qualify for disability benefits, your open enrollment period begins the day that your Medicare Part B coverage starts, and lasts 6 months. People on disability are eligible for open enrollment into a Texas Medicare Supplement Plan A only.

Texas Residents Discuss Medicare Supplement Insurance with a Texas Medigap Advisor

For Texans who are over 65 and coming off group coverage that already have Medicare Part B, you are in a "guaranteed issue" period for 63 days from the time your group coverage ends. Guaranteed issue right is valid for 63 days from the date coverage ends or from the date of notice that coverage will end. Companies may not place any restrictions, such as pre-existing condition waiting periods or exclusions, on these policies.

A Texas Medigap Plan has a 30-Day "free look" period, in which you may return or cancel your policy and have your premium refunded with no questions asked. Also, Texas Medigap Plans are "guaranteed renewable", which means an insurance company cannot cancel your policy or refuse to renew it unless you made intentional false statements on your application or you have not paid your premium.

Shopping for a Texas Medicare Supplement Policy

Consult with a Medicare Supplement Insurance Advisor to get the information you need.

In Texas, there are several different insurance companies that offer Medicare Supplemental Insurance due to these plans being "standardized", meaning regardless of which company you choose, the coverage is identical within each plan letter. Therefore a Medigap Plan F from United of Omaha, is identical coverage to a Medigap Plan F from AARP, yet the premiums can vary dramatically between the two.

Therefore, some important points to consider when shopping for a Texas Medicare Supplement are:

  • Prepare!

You may submit a Medicare Supplement application up to 6 months prior to your start date in most cases, and you certainly want to take advantage of any open enrollment or guaranteed issue period. In many cases applying early will also "lock-in" your rate in case there are any rate increase prior to your start date.

  • Shop Around!

Have a Medigap Advisor explain the differences in coverage to you helping you understand the entire process of Medicare and Medicare Supplements.
