Which Medigap Insurance is best?
Medigap Insurance plans (or Medicare Supplements) are offered by private insurance companies to help offset the various costs associated with Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B insurance. These plans are lettered A -N each with slight differences and premiums.
There are several private insurance companies that offer Medicare Supplement plans. Do to the standardization of these plans, they are all required to cover the exact same things within a specific plan letter. What this means is if you are considering a Medigap Plan F from one particular company, it will be absolutely no different from a Plan F from another company. Companies can and often do vary their premiums widely for exactly the same coverage. This makes shopping for the best rate a priority.
Medigap Plans help cover the "gaps" in Medicare Part A and Part B. Those who are enrolled in Original Medicare are financially responsible for these gaps, which are deductibles and coinsurance.
Part A
- Hospital Admittance Deductible - $1100 (2010) per benefit period
Part B
- Annual Deductible -$155 per year
- Co-Insurance - 20% of Doctor's Bills
June 1st. 2010
On June 1st. 2010 Medigap Insurance Plans changed slightly. There are four plans which were eliminated, which are E, H, I and J. Also eliminated on June 1st. 2010 were two benefits called At-Home Recovery and Preventative Care.
Another change that occurred is with the very popular Medigap Plan G. Up until May 31st. of 2010, Plan G only covered 80% of any excess charges that doctor's are allowed to add. If you enroll in a Medicare Supplement Plan G on June 1st. or after, your Medigap Plan G will cover 100% of the excess charges should your doctor elect to implement them. The At-Home Recovery benefit is also being eliminated, therefore Plan G will not have that either after June 1st. 2010. Medicare Supplement Plan F will be the most comprehensive plan available and will not have any benefit change.
New Medigap Insurance for 2010
Also In June 2010, there are two new plans that will be available to those on Medicare. These Plans are lettered Medigap Plan M, and Medigap Plan N. They offer cost sharing benefits which allows for lower premiums. These plans are an excellent opportunity for those on a Medicare Advantage Plan to return to Original Medicare and still remain in a lower-premium type of plan.
Pre-Existing Conditions
For those with Pre-Existing conditions at least one of the new Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans available on June 1st. 2010 should be of great interest. There is at least one Insurance company that is offering this plan with limited underwriting in almost every state until further notice. This means regardless of your current health status, you have an outstanding chance of qualifying for this plan. This could save you a great deal of money in monthly premiums, with a few small cost sharing options such as:
- Hospital Admittance - $50 Co-Pay
- Part B annual deductible - $155
- Co-Pay for Doctor's Visit - Up to $20
